After 45 years, Sonia Manzano, also known as Maria to countless children and adults, will be leaving Sesame Street. The iconic character has been on the show since 1971 and was just 22 years old when she auditioned while a student at Carnegie Mellon. Manzano who is of Puerto Rican decent, was one of the few Hispanics on National television during the early 1970s and her groundbreaking contribution to the show opened the doors for many other people of Hispanic background. Now 65, the Emmy Award winning actress has announced her retirement. She will be missed!
