Every year an estimated one million people gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop. I myself have been out there on a cold New Year’s Eve while my feet froze anticipating the drop of a well lit ball. This year, New Yorkers and visitors have another option to celebrate in our well loved city. Coney Island will be hosting a New Year’s Eve Ball Drop event followed by fireworks. Instead of featuring a ball as in Times Square, the Coney Island celebration will feature a countdown light display of the iconic Parachute Jump tower which will illuminate completely once the clock strikes midnight. Borough President Eric Adams began his plans for the new holiday tradition before he was elected president, boasting “Now that we have our own seaside ball drop, why be squished like a sardine in Times Square when you can rejoice like royalty in the County of Kings!”
After the “ball drop”, Boardwalk restaurants and bars will be open to serve party goers and host after parties. You can also watch the Coney Island Sideshows will which include boardwalk favorites such as fire spitters, fortune tellers and people on stilts. So if you have plans to go to jam packed Times Square this year, Fuhgeddaaboutit and head to Brooklyn instead.
